Here is a sample day from one of the available itineraries prepared for New England and the  Maritimes. All itineraries give detailed driving directions and accurate measurement of distances, in addition to listing areas of interest and recommended campgrounds along the route.
"DAY 1: ROCKLAND TO BAR HARBOR
Turn right out of the driveway and travel east on Rt. 90 for approximately 5 miles to Rt.1, Rockport. Turn left onto Rt. 1 heading north. You will travel through the towns of Camden, Belfast and Searsport , once inhabited by wealthy sea merchants. The elaborate Victorian and Federal style homes that they built still stand along Rt. 1 overlooking Penobscot Bay. At the town of Stockton Springs, (approx. 28 mi. from Rockport) the road forks. You should by pass Rt. 1A and stay right to continue on Rt. 1 to Ellsworth, approximately 30 miles. In Ellsworth you may want to stop at the LLBean Outlet Store or take a coffee or lunch break at one of the many restaurants that line either side of your route. As you are leaving Ellsworth you will take Rt. 3 east toward Bar Harbor. The Rts.1 and 3 split occur at a traffic light as you are leaving the town of Ellsworth and you will go right onto Rt. 3 traveling for approximately 10 miles before crossing Mt. Desert Narrows onto Mt. Desert Island. You will see the Thompson Island Information Center on your right. Mt. Desert Narrows Camping Resort is 2 miles east on Rt. 3. The Acadia National Park Visitors Center is approximately 7 miles east on Rt. 3. The town of Bar Harbor is 2.75 miles beyond the Visitor Center. Watch for signs.
Suggestion: If you arrive in the area after 2pm, check in at the resort first and then you can drive to the Visitors Center. If you arrive prior to check in, go directly to the Visitors Center so that you can plan your activities for the balance of the day. Please keep in mind that you will be returning to Acadia National Park for another night at the end of your trip, so that you can enjoy additional area activities and experiences.
Mt. Dessert Narrows Camping Resort is located on Thomas Bay and offers some ocean front camping. They offer all of the usual amenities plus a shuttle bus to Bar Harbor.
Acadia and Bar Harbor: There is much to do here! Explore the lovely seaside town of Bar Harbor. Choose from one of three companies that offer whale, puffin, seal and lighthouse watching expeditions. Most whale watch excursions leave morning to mid afternoon. Acadia Whale Watcher, leaving from the Golden Anchor Inn on West Street does offer a late afternoon cruise for seal and lighthouse watching. Fees start at $30/$16. The park offers boundless opportunities from driving the scenic roads to hiking to horse drawn carriage rides, guided ranger tours, bus tours. The list goes on and on. The Park Visitors Center has all of the information that you will need to enjoy your stay in this area. A 15-minute film about Mt. Desert Island is shown on the half hour. ENJOY!
